Best of 2011

Posted in Music on 0:53, January 10th, 2012

2011 has turned me back into metal seriously. I almost lost interest in the industrial scene as there’s nothing new worthwhile. At the same time my interest in dark/neo folk has risen to the new heights. This top will show records that shook the ground for me during the last year.

Hooded Menace – “Never Cross the Dead”
Archgoat – “The Light-Devouring Darkness”
Runemajick – “Darkness Death Doom”
Art Abscons – “Der Verborgene Gott”
Demonaz – “March Of The Norse”
Triptykon – “Eparistera Daimones”
Sarke – “Vorunah”
Six Feet Under – “Death Rituals”
Gae Bolg – “Petit Traite De Gymnosophie”
Ghost – “Opus Eponymous”
Dannagoischd – “Emm Dichda Ondrholz”
Enslaved – “Axioma Ethica Odini”
Electric Wizard – “Black Masses”

Here’s more than 10, fuck top tens! I have top 13 this year. I just can’t omit fine releases I bought last year. Oh and of course this list doesn’t mean the records were issued in 2011. The year of acquirement by me is what matters ;)

And it’s an epic one. According to my new policy, no silly reviews, just giant covers with links to Discogs. And next update will be traditional my top ten albums of 2011.

Hnífi í hálsi, hnífur í höfuði
Hnífur í hrygg og hnífur í brjósti
Blóði renna, hjarta brenna

Viðlag – Dreptu allur

Út með auga, vörum springa
Bein bryðta, andlit kremja
Tannar losna, kjöti brenna

Viðlag – Dreptu allur

Hnakka skola brjotna, hálsikykja
Innyflins fossa, fletta haúðinni
Bíta eyrum sundur, rifa hári laust

Viðlag – Dreptu allur

Settu deim á staurar, lattu astvinir peirrasjá
Nauða peim, ettu peim, lattu astvinirpeirra fa aðsmakka
Brenndu peim, halshöggu deim, og astvinir deirra lika

Turn off your mind

Black acid nightmare
Demons rise inside.

Acid burns your mind
You will never find
Only darkness inside
Turn, turn off your mind.

Colours die and turn to grey
All love has turned to pain.

Goddess Of The Abyss Of Graves

So here it comes, I went mad and I stopped give a fuck to everything (like I did before this post, eh). Everything lost meaning and became totally worthless: job, life, this fuckcity I live in, even this shitty winter with its grey clouds and feeble attempts to make some proper cold. It feels like I just opened gates to Hell after all these years of coping. With all these new limited editions of vinyl that started dropping on me like some sort of Satanic hailstorm I became corrupted acolyte that obeys to orders from this rotating turntable thing. You’ll never understand me, and I don’t care, because you’ll never have a chance to listen to Archgoat on vinyl. And I tell ya, these two records obliterated the rest of the sense from my half-decayed brains. If you’re fan of Beherit, you just have to obey to Archgoat spells. It’s a wonder that I missed this band for so long. Thank goes to vinyl gods that turned me to this madness. These two albums have completely destroyed me: “Heavenly Vulva” and “The Light-Devouring Darkness”. Now I know what to do next…

And since I’ve got mountain of new records I will be physically unable to write about them in one post because I’ll get bored in the middle, so I’ll post about the rest of the stuff I’ve got later when I’ll have proper chemically imbalanced state of mind…
Also, I got bored of my site after several years of no changing its design, If I’ll have inspiration I’ll completely turn it inside out during New Year holidays and will change it to bigger pics of releases I’m getting and less words from me (noone reads this shit anyway), etc. And today I’ll start with huge pics of albums I’m writing about (Archgoat deserves it!).

Vinyl madness

I’ve finally submitted to this vinyl cult. And now I’m proud owner of turntable and first pack of vinyls which I got recently. Looks like I’m in a deep state of music addiction, and there’s no way back.  The stuff I’ve got first is what was in my friend distributor’s list at the moment. And I’ve already ordered some disks from Peaceville and Rise Above Records and waiting for them impatiently. So what’s in this unusually big sized package?

First comes classic Lustmord“Zoetrope” 2xLP. This is soundtrack for the short movie Zoetrope, which is quite vartied dark ambient, filled with various noises of all kinds and of course with dark atmosphere of suffering. I decided to get it on vinyl despite having movie and CDs just for the sake of it. Because it’s classic.

Art Abscons“Am Himmel mit Feuer II” LP. This is special release. Limited to 50 copies, comes on gold vinyl and represents it’s CD album, but with slightly different set of tracks. Since I fell in love with Art Abscons, this album is no exception. Very nice dark folk!

Land:Fire“Gone” LP. This band is my old favourite. Proper techno industrial from Germany. It’s first release of the project and it sets the theme. It seems a bit underdeveloped from their late works, but there’s potential which attracts me.

Of The Wand And The Moon“It’s like dying on Christmas Day” 7″. These are two awesome tracks that represent the new full length album “The Lone Descent”. This is quite fresh music for the project. It has some resemblance with rock’n'roll, but heavily saturated with trademark Of The Wand atmosphere. Very fresh idea! Can’t wait to get full album.

Ordo Rosarius Equilibrio“Songs 4 Hate & Devotion” LP. This is the latest album of the act. It doesn’t sounds different from their previous work. Still it’s nice Ordo as you know it. Calm melodies filled with eroticism and emotions. Their official site has 2 videos showing what to expect from the album.

On a side note, my long time favourite british doom metal band My Dying Bride have finally arrived to Moscow last Sunday. The long 15 years wait is over! The gig was amazing, the set list was very cool, considering they were trying to use as much albums as possible. Sound was also nice since the club is quite new and modern. Hope they’ll return since I missed autograph session before the concert ;)

Night Of The Deathcult

Hooded Menace“Never Cross The Dead”. I was waiting for this album for ever, it got stuck at distributor for some weird reason. But the time has come! I can finally submerge into the darkest and heaviest riffs from Finland. I discovered this band on the interwebs when hunting for the new doom music. It was praised all over the place, so I didn’t wait long and downloaded it to check. And it turned to be rather quality doom metal in oldskool vein, the type I like the most. So the CD was instantly ordered and I had to suffer without it waiting for it.

The next two CDs are from the russian label 7Hz Records. Uedineniya – “Red Meridian” is ambient inspired by the old 8mm movie found in the old garage. Movie is a diary of one of the many russian polar expeditions. It reflects the cold, monotonous and hard work of those days. Rather nice cold spacious ambient. Good touch of the release is that they included the movie itself on a second CD.

Inorganic Blossoming – “Autumndrones”. This is autumn ambient. The recording of this album took place only during autumn times so it took several years to complete it. The music itself is field recordings of autumn nature, there’re some processed classic instruments as well. All this gives music certain warmth, typical for the calm autumn day. Where you can hear falling leaves in the forest and dying Sun shines through the half naked trees.

My Dying Bride“The Barghest  O’ Whitby”. Got CD this weekend! This is the latest opus of my favourite doom metal band. This time it’s one 27 min track telling the story about the monstrous dog, posessed by the demon. I liked vocal change on this album, it feels a bit processed, but in a proper whicked way. Slow places remind of Turn Loose The Swans era and fast ones are pretty much trademark with proper growling. All in all rather nice EP.
